“You can’t ask every player to do the same thing. That’s why we have amazing midfielders, defenders, forwards and keepers. You can’t ask them to be of the same mold.”
Tiffeny Milbrett, former USA women’s international
Oriol Busquets is a player that shares the same surname as the current Barcelona deep lying playmaker, Sergio Busquets. And, he also shares the same jersey number and plays in the same position however they are not related in anyway. This has not stopped the youngster from bearing the burden of being labelled the “next Sergio Busquets.” In this brief report, I dive into the nitty gritty about all we know so far about the young Spanish midfielder and completely avoid the boring inevitable comparison with Sergio Busquets.
Oriol Busquets has a few different strengths in this category. Even though he just turned 18 years old, he already possesses the presence of a first team player and already towers above other players in his age group. This makes him a great at winning headers as he is usually bigger than his opposition. His height has not been officially listed yet but he does look near 6 foot.
His work rate is another thing worthy of note because he covers every blade of grass defensively and every now and then even pushes the ball forward in long busting runs from deep with the ball. He is also very good at using his strength, what he does best is when on the ball he uses his body to shield the ball very effectively and makes the opposition defenders have to go around him to take the ball off him or foul him. And when off the ball, he prefers to make tackles the same way by getting his body in between the opposition and the ball. He rarely dives into tackles and prefers to muscle players of the ball and at such a young age, he does this at a very consistent rate.
For such a tall midfielder, he is impressive in tight spaces and also seems to never lose the ball when he is surrounded by opposition pressure. His short passes are often very accurate however when he does try to expand the play he is not as accurate. His long passes need to be worked upon and his ability to play forward passes is also not great. His first touch is very impressive and his tackling technique is very controlled and equally impressive.
He can work on a few different aspects in this category, his main being his ability to control and dictate the tempo of the game. Busquets doesn’t always demand the ball or get touches when the team is building play from the back. And, often needs to work on his positioning when off the ball, that way he can get more touches on the ball. With that said, he is very good tactically and always has an eye for interceptions. He knows how to be in the right position defensively and his in game intelligence is much better defensively
He has the potential to be a future starter for Barcelona whether that would be at Defensive midfielder (number 6) or at the heart of the defence as a ball playing Centre back.
