Name: Kevin Akpoguma Age: April 19, 1995 (21 years old)
Club: Fortuna Duesseldorf League: 2. Bundesliga
Nationality: French/Guinea Height: 192 cm, 6’4 Position: CB/RB
Contract until: 30/06/2017
“His 1.92 metres (6’4in) are perfect for a centre back. He has speed, good technique and is a dynamic player. In 2013 he got the Fritz-Walter medal in gold from the DFB, which honours every year the best German players of U17, U18 and U19. He has said that the coaches want him to become more stable, to play a whole game without errors,” said Goal Germany’s Christoph Kockeis.
Kevin Akpoguma is a nigerian born German youth international and was one of the key players in the 2014 U19 European Championship triumph with his national team in Hungary. The other players in that Championship winning team have gone to make their debuts in the Bundesliga with the likes of Davie Selke, Julian Brandt, Joshua Kimmich, Nicklas Stark etc all having played major games at the top tier.
Kevin Akpoguma has had to go down to the 2nd tier and looks hungry for his opportunity at the top level. Before the 2015 U20 World Cup, he stated;
“After the season we have put together a timetable and plan for the future, because next year I want to make the step into professional football. That’s why I’m always glad to be at the U20. Here we can show ourselves internationally,”
And, true to his word, this young defender has slowly established himself as one of German 2nd tier’s best young defenders. A versatile defender who can play all across the back four. He started out his career as a right back but he has played his best football for his current team at CB.
Since the middle of the last season, he has been an ever present in the team and has put out some impressive performances. He is still at the moment a player who gets relatively little exposure to potential suitor so his future at the moment will be determined by the fortunes of his current team. A player with good potential to one day play in German’s top tier.
