Belgium has over the past 5 years become a hotbed for top quality footballers and this is not showing any signs of slowing down. Matthias Verreth is just another youngster to join the long line of Belgians looking to break into the realms of football stardom. Him alongside his Under 18s Belgium national team-mate Dante Rigo look certain to follow the steps of the likes of Jurgen Locadia and Memphis Depay in recent years and break into the first team before their 20th birthday.
As player, he is quite physical and does like to use his strength against the full backs when he plays wide. Often, working hard trying closing down opponents and is not afraid to track back and help his defender, a rarity for a young forward. He is not the fastest player for a winger especially since his favoured position is wide right but he does possess decent aerial threat against often smaller fullbacks in youth tournaments.
In terms of his technique, his best asset is his powerful left foot shot. He is also very capable of scoring incredible volleys with his left foot. For a winger, he lacks a certain flair, quite predictable in one on one situations. His passing range is not greatest and is at his best when playing the short passing game. A decent crosser but his style of player is more suited to an inside forward than out and out winger.
He does favour his left foot for his shooting and prefers to cut in to his strongest foot even in situation where his weaker foot might been the better option. Verrath’s concentration is still in need of work because he does at times rush his shots. He gets in good goal scoring situations but often lacks the composure to pick the right shot. His movement coming from out wide and the way he times his runs to arrive late in the box should also be noted and applauded. Although, he can play as a striker, his strengths as a player are highlighted more when he plays as an inside forward from out wide.
Potential: International class
At 18 years old, Matthais Verreth is already showing signs of player capable of breaking into the PSV first team. If his progression is not interrupted by any serious injury or lack of game time, Verreth will be a Belgian international player in the near future.
