Name: Lucas Cavalcante Silva Afonso Age: 19 years old (born March 23, 1996 ) Club: São Paulo FC
League: Campeonato Brasileiro Série A Height: 185 cm, 6”1 Position: CB
A young Brazilian centre back, who is also known as “Lucas” or “Lucas Silva”, is slowly becoming one of Sao Paolo’s most important defender. He has been capped throughout the different youth teams for Brazil including the winners of the 2013 Toulon Tournament. With the new manager, “Doriva” who has given the youngster more and more responsibility, the future looks bright. As he say:
“ I believe that with our characteristics and the work of the new coach, who is implementing his philosophy, we have everything to improve“
At six foot one, he is physically ready to be a first choice regular and has all the characteristics of a typical centre back. He can still bulk up even more but with modern centre backs this is no longer a requirement. For a centre back, he does also possess a good level of pace which helps him recover every time he does get caught out by an opposition player. However, his biggest physical attribute is his vertical leap, he has decent leap and does cheap in with the occasional headed goal.
A composed centre back both on and off the ball. And when it comes to playing with the ball to feet, he is a perfect example of a modern centre back. Good passing range and comfortable playing out of from the back. He prefers to stay on his feet with his tackling and on dives into a tackle when recovering or to prevent a goal scoring opportunity.
His best attributes are easily in this department. Wonderful positioning for such a young centre back and very intelligent. He has knack for anticipating danger however he is not the most aggressive of defenders. Reads the game very well and vocal when needed so he is very capable of leading an offside trap. However, although he reads the game well and usually gets to the ball before his opposition, he can at times be soft in the tackle.
Potential: (World Class)
A great young centre back who looks on his way to being a regular for his national side and possibly play for one of Europe’s widely recognised clubs. A youngster who the likes of FC Porto, SL Benfica, Udinese etc should consider buying because he can potentially be good cheap investment which they can profit from in the future.
