This 18 year-old midfielder is a product of the Willem II youth academy but was recently signed by Dutch giants Ajax and has been left at Willem II on loan. Also, as part of the deal, Lucas Andersen, has also gone on loan at the same club to join the other three Ajax loanees already at the club. This has meant more competition for Frenkie De Jong and has resulted in him turning up more for the second string team than the first team. A model professional with a good attitude who is eager to impress at Willem II second string and his future employers Ajax. According to Voetbal, Frenkie De Jong is known as one of the greatest talents in Tilburg.

A typical Dutch playmaker who uses intelligence over strength and speed. He has good agility, fairly decent level of pace and acceleration however he is not rapid quick. A fairly tenacious midfielder who works hard defensively but doesn’t have the greatest stamina which leads to his presence in the game fading in the later stages of the game.

His technical abilities are easily his biggest strengths, he has an impeccable touch and great passing range. Quite comfortable with both feet and has incredible vision. The type of midfielder who gives other attacking players encouragement to make runs and break defensive lines because he can pick you out from anywhere. He can also dictate the tempo in midfield which makes his team-mates look for him when on the ball. Dribbles using his laces whilst keeping his eyes on everything around him and can change direction at an moment effortlessly.

His biggest weakness is that for an attacking midfielder or central midfielder, he does lack the understanding of using space around to create passing lanes. His lack of spatial awareness does result in him making poor off the ball movement and can go missing for large periods in games. Another weakness, is that he is not as tactically astute as the other play making wonderkids like Gotze or Wilshere were at his age and he still doesn’t contribute enough goals or assists.

Potential: (International level)

****** (6/10)

To conclude, he is a model professional with a good attitude who never stops trying and running even when on his last legs. He has potential to be a regular for Ajax and possibly leave for greener pastures. Will definitely be a player to watch out for in the future Dutch national squads.
